Noel Whelan has suggested to BBC Radio Leeds that Leeds United star Samuel Saiz should have been awarded the ‘Man of the Match’ award, not Nottingham Forest ace Liam Bridcutt.

Bridcutt was adjudged as the best player on the pitch during the Championship game between Leeds and Forest at Elland Road by Sky Sports.

The 28-year-old defensive midfielder started the game and played for the entire 90 minutes.

Saiz, who can operate as a forward or as an attacking midfielder, featured for Leeds against Forest.

The 26-year-old Spaniard started the game at Elland Road and played for the entire 90 minutes.

Former Leeds striker Whelan believes that Saiz should have been awarded the ‘Man of the Match’ award, not Bridcutt.

Whelan told BBC Radio Leeds about the decision to hand Bridcutt the MOTM award: “It is bizarre.

“You look at Saiz, who has been instrumental in so many things today, okay, actually stands out a mile above everyone else today.”

“Saiz cut above, different gravy altogether,” added Whelan.

Over the course of the 90 minutes at Elland Road on Monday afternoon, hosts Leeds had 51% of the possession, took 19 shots of which seven were on target, and earned two corners, according to BBC Sport.

Visitors Forest had 49% of the possession, took seven shots of which one was on target, and earned eight corners, according to BBC Sport.

Meanwhile, Whelan gave his opinion on the performance of Vurnon Anita and told BBC Radio Leeds: “I thought he was fine.

“He doesn’t offer the same going forward as Ayling and neither does Berardi, but I thought Berardi actually got further forward than Anita did today.”
