Pontus Jansson scored for Leeds United against Aston Villa on Sunday.

Noel Whelan has praised Leeds United central defender Pontus Jansson on BBC Radio Leeds following his performance against Aston Villa at the weekend.

Jansson scored with a brilliant header during Leeds’s 3-2 comeback win against Villa away from home at Villa Park in the Championship on Sunday afternoon.

Against the Villans, the 27-year-old Sweden international centre-back took two shots, had a pass accuracy of 78.6%, won 10 headers, and made two tackles, four interceptions and five clearances, according to WhoScored.

According to WhoScored, Jansson has made 15 starts and two substitute appearances in the Championship for Leeds so far this season, scoring two goals in the process.

Former Leeds striker Whelan was impressed with the performance of Jansson against Villa, and believes that the Swedish defender is a changed player this season.

Whelan said about Jansson on BBC Radio Leeds: “He is an important player for Leeds, he really is. We saw glimpses last season of him throwing the towel in, but this season we have seen a different Pontus, we have seen a committed Pontus to the cause, to the team, to the club.”

Jansson is one of the best central defenders in the Championship, and the performances of the Sweden international at the back for Leeds so far this season have been superb.

With Leeds aiming to win automatic promotion to the Premier League this season, the 27-year-old’s importance in the team is only going to grow in the coming months.
