Helder Costa, on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Gaetano Berardi were in action for Leeds United against Birmingham City at the weekend.

Noel Whelan has suggested on BBC Radio Leeds that Wolverhampton Wanderers-owned winger Helder Costa needs to step up for Leeds United.

The former Leeds striker made the comments about Costa following the Championship game between the Whites and Birmingham City at Elland Road on Saturday afternoon.

Whelan was not impressed with the display produced by the 25-year-old, and believes that the Portugal international winger needs to step up.

The former Leeds striker, who now works as a pundit for BBC Radio Leeds, was pleased with the display produced by 31-year-old defender Gaetano Berardi.

Whelan said about Costa on BBC Radio Leeds: “There’s so much more to come from him. He’s got to have a lot more impact on a game from that position.

“We know he can take people on, but how many times did he take someone on and get to the byline? How many times did he drive into that 18 yard box? He’s one that needs to step up to the mark as well.

“He’s been given an opportunity while Hernandez is out. Quite frankly, I don’t think he’s taken it. I think Hernandez will go straight back in in place of Costa. I don’t think he’s done enough.”

Whelan said about Berardi on BBC Radio Leeds: “Excellent. It’s controlled anger. That controlled aggression. But not only defensively was he great, I thought he was fantastic on the ball.”
