Noel Whelan has said on BBC Radio Leeds that Leeds United youngster Jack Clarke should get used to being tightly marked.

The former Leeds striker made the comments about Clarke following the Whites’ 2-1 win against Rotherham United away from home in the Championship on Saturday afternoon.

The 18-year-old, who can operate as a winger or as a forward, started the match and played for the first half.

The youngster had a game to forget, as the teenager was tightly marked and he failed to impose himself.

Stats

The winger did not have much time on the ball, and it did not come as a surprise to see Leeds head coach Marcelo Bielsa not bring him back on the pitch for the second half.

According to WhoScored, Clarke had a pass accuracy of 50%, and made two tackles.

So far this season, the 18-year-old has made three starts and 11 substitute appearances in the Championship for Leeds, scoring two goals and providing two assists in the process, according to WhoScored.

The youngster’s performances this season have reportedly attracted the attention of clubs in the Premier League, with Football.London claiming of Tottenham Hotspur’s interest in the teenager and The Daily Mail reporting that Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is admirer of the 18-year-old.

Warning and advice

Former Leeds striker Whelan believes that Clarke needs to get used to the attention he will receive from opposition players now that people know how good he is.

Whelan said about Clarke on BBC Radio Leeds: “Jack Clarke wasn’t himself today. He got a lot of attention, but he is going to get that when the spotlight’s on and people start raving about him.

“He is going to be tightly marked because he is one of those players who can change a game. So he is going to have get used to that kind of attention from the opposition.”
