Noel Whelan liked the Leeds United midfielder’s industry.
Noel Whelan has told BBC Radio Leeds that Kalvin Phillips’s work rate for Leeds United was simply “incredible” on Saturday.
Leeds recorded their most impressive victory to date in the Thomas Christiansen era after smashing Burton Albion 5-0 at Elland Road.
First-half goals from debutant Pierre-Michel Lasogga, Phillips himself and a penalty from Pablo Hernandez helped United into a 3-0 half-time lead, before Kemar Roofe and another from Lasogga killed off the match completely by 59 minutes.
It was a thoroughly impressive showing from Christiansen’s side and nobody put a foot wrong, but Whelan has singled out the 21-year-old for his excellent off-the-ball work.
He told BBC Radio Leeds: “I don’t know how much ground Kalvin Phillips covered but at one stage he was picking the ball up at the right-back position and within two passes he was in the left wing position. His work rate is incredible.”
Phillips certainly does look a more rounded player since Christiansen replaced Garry Monk this past summer, with the Thorp Arch academy product now adding goals to his game.
Scoring today means that the young midfielder has three goals in the Championship this season, trebling his total for the entire 2016-17 campaign under Monk.
