Noel Whelan comments on Chris Wood speculation

Leeds United striker Chris Wood has been linked with moves away from Elland Road in the summer transfer window.

Noel Whelan has told West Yorkshire Sport that Leeds United should keep hold of Chris Wood if they want to get promoted to the Premier League.

Wood is one of the best strikers in the Championship and is a key figure in the current Leeds team.

The New Zealand international striker scored 27 goals in the Championship last season and 13 in the league during the 2015-16 campaign for the Whites.

The 25-year-old has been linked with moves away from Elland Road in the summer transfer window, with Premier League duo West Bromwich Albion and Burnley reported to be interested in him.

According to a report in The Birmingham Mail, West Brom are interested in Wood, while The Yorkshire Post reported last week that Leeds had turned down an offer of £12 million plus add-ons from Burnley for the striker.

Former Leeds striker Whelan, who now works as a pundit for BBC Sport, has said that for the Whites to get promoted to the Premier League at the end of the season, either via the playoffs or automatically, they need to keep hold of Wood.

“We don’t need to be a selling club,” Whelan told West Yorkshire Sport about Wood’s future.

“We need to keep our best players if there is any aspiration in terms of getting promoted this season or giving us a chance of automatic, definitely we want to be in the playoffs. To do that you have got to keep your best players, and Chris Wood certainly is one.”
