Leeds United suffered their first Championship defeat of the season on Saturday.
Marcelo Bielsa experienced a league defeat for the first time since taking over at Elland Road in the summer. And what made the loss all the more painful for the fans is that it was orchestrated by former boss Garry Monk.
Birmingham’s first goal came in slightly bizarre circumstances as Che Adams managed to completely wrong-foot Peacock-Farrell with his effort from outside the box. It should have perhaps been a fairly regulation stop for the Leeds stopper, but his attempt to anticipate Adams sending the shot across him proved costly as the ball went in at the near side of the goal.
And after the contest, Whelan suggested that Peacock-Farrell will be hugely disappointed that he was beaten in such a manner.
“He was about 24 yards out, it was pretty central where the ball went into the goal. He’s just tried to anticipate it. Because of Che Adams’ body shape, it looked like he was just going to bend it into the far corner, and in the end, he’s put it through the middle and he’s flat-footed. He’d gone to the left-hand side and he couldn’t recover from that, but that’s something he’ll probably learn from I guess.”
Given Bielsa’s tendency to keep faith with what appears to be his favoured lineup, it would probably be something of a surprise if Peacock-Farrell was dropped for Friday’s clash at Sheffield Wednesday.
The youngster has been superb for much of his run as first choice. And while it was a costly mistake on this occasion, he would probably not be too disappointed with his form throughout the campaign if that proves to be the worst piece of judgement that he makes all season.
