Noel Whelan believes Leeds United’s transfer strategy may have crucial flaw

Leeds have bought well this summer, but have they done it in a balanced way?

Leeds manager Thomas Christiansen looks on during the Sky Bet Championship match between Cardiff City and Leeds United at Cardiff City Stadium on September 26, 2017 in Cardiff, Wales.

Questions are being asked of Leeds United after two successive away defeats in the Championship.

Losses against Millwall and Cardiff City have seen Leeds outbattled and outplayed, failing to click with the same attacking style which saw them recently score three past Ipswich at home and five against Burton.

On the most part Leeds United’s summer signings have been excellent.

While one or two need time to settle, Ezgjan Alioski and Samu Saiz have been a breath of fresh air.

Leeds have scored the second highest number of goals in the division, and are playing the most attractive football at Elland Road for years.

Former Leeds striker Noel Whelan believes the balance may not be right, speaking after their loss to Cardiff.

He told BBC Radio Leeds: “We can’t just be a footballing side. We’ve got to be able to mix it.

“People have got to learn. They are going to get other tests like this, they can’t just keep buckling.

“I’m not sure we got that sort of player. We bought footballing players who like it on the deck. We’re lacking. They roughed us up. I’m not sure if you look at size of team that we can go out and bully teams.”

Former Leeds defender Sol Bamba was played in an unusual defensive midfield role for Cardiff and the Whites found it tough to deal with his physical presence.

At the back Leeds won’t be bullied with Pontus Jansson in the side, but there is a lack of height in midfield which could be a weak point.

More often than not, Leeds have the talent to win games, but there will be games where they just do not match up well.

Their two league losses this season suggest there is still plenty of work to do.
