Leeds United suffered yet another Championship defeat, losing 3-1 away at Brentford.
The Whites’ disappointing run continued this weekend as the Bees inflicted their seventh defeat in nine Championship games upon them as they ran out 3-1 winners at Griffin Park.
The latest defeat has meant that virtually all of the early-season optimism has evaporated and leaves Leeds going into the international break tenth in the table, 10 points off the automatic-promotion spots that they spent much of the early part of the campaign occupying.
And while Whelan did not exactly come down on one side of the fence, he hinted that Christiansen may not be able to have too many complaints in today’s climate if he was sacked.
“As a manager, it dictates you by results. At the moment, when you look at that, I’ve seen people get sacked for less,” he told BBC Radio Leeds when asked if he should be sacked.
“It’s critical now. That’s an awful run of results – there’s no skirting around the edges, there’s no polishing over it, even against teams we should’ve beaten, you look at our home form, it’s completely dropped.
“A good result against Bristol City doesn’t make up for the last two defeats. We can’t keep coming in with one win and losing three. We’ve now got a run of games which could send us further down if we don’t buck our ideas up.”
While there unquestionably appears to be a growing number of supporters who want to see Christiansen replaced, it appears that that number is still quite small, with many recognising that the long-term project in place at Elland Road will not benefit from Andrea Radrizzani replacing his managers as often as his predecessor did.
But it must be said that if results do not turn around quickly after the break, the noise coming from the fans who want Christiansen gone may become too loud for Radrizzani to ignore.
