Tottenham Hotspur have been told that Micky van de Ven is the signing of the season ahead of teammate James Maddison.

Pundit William Gallas feels Tottenham Hotspur have absolutely struck gold by signing defender Micky van de Ven this summer.

Spurs needed a real injection of quality over the summer having struggled last season.

Ange Postecoglou was backed with some big signings as James Maddison came in from Leicester City for around £40million.

Tottenham then struck another big deal, paying £34.5million rising to £43million for Wolfsburg defender Micky van de Ven – which now looks like a masterstroke.

William Gallas hails Tottenham signing Micky van de Ven

Van de Ven has been outstanding in the heart of the Tottenham defence, forming a strong partnership with Cristian Romero.

The Dutchman is tall and incredibly fast whilst also showing the ability to build out of defence as a naturally left-footed defender.

Van de Ven has now been praised by former Spurs defender William Gallas, who has been speaking to The Mirror (05/11, p63).

Gallas suggests that whilst James Maddison is being touted as the signing of the season, it’s actually Van de Ven in his opinion.

The Frenchman feels that Maddison’s quality was already well-known in England and he was always likely to make an impact for Tottenham.

Gallas believes ‘nobody knew’ Van de Ven before his move to Tottenham and feels his adaptation from the Bundesliga to the Premier League makes him the real signing of the season.

“James Maddison is not the best signing of the season – Van de Ven is,” said Gallas. “We already knew how good Maddison was, and him going to Spurs was the natural progression. People aren’t surprised to see him doing so well, and Tottenham’s players have more quality than Leicester’s.”

“Nobody knew Van de Ven prior to his arrival and he’s playing in his first Premier League season. He had to adapt to a new team and a new league. He doesn’t make mistakes and he plays a very simple, effective game. People are starting to speak about him now and he’s starting to score,” he added.

Van de Ven looks like a star for years to come

Tottenham knew that they would likely have to spend big money on a proper left-footed centre back for the future.

The market has exploded in that regard and club regularly pay big fees for left-footed defenders.

Just look at Lisandro Martinez and Josko Gvardiol in recent times.

Tottenham had to land their long-term solution and did so with a move for Van de Ven, who still has bags of potential at just 23.

Van de Ven needs to avoid injuries and drops in form, but it looks like Tottenham have a real star of the future on their hands.
