In one of the more intriguing decisions in recent Premier League memory, Mark Noble has been made West Ham’s new Sporting Director.
The former Hammer retired at the end of last season, but he didn’t spend too much time away from the game, heading back to his former club as the new Sporting Director almost immediately.
It will be interesting to see what Noble brings to West Ham in this role.
On one hand, he certainly wants the best for the club, and he’s very experienced within the game, but on the other hand, he’s never done this role before, and he’s not the most well-travelled of footballers – spending his entire career with West Ham, so his contact book may be smaller than most Sporting Directors’ especially as he didn’t have an international career either.

Noble may have to call upon some of his old West Ham contacts in the early days in this job. The likes of Jesse Lingard and Dimitri Payet may be fielding calls from Noble in the coming weeks, but, in our view, there’s one player Noble may look at bringing back to east London.
Indeed, it’s no secret that the midfielder was a huge fan of Grady Diangana during his time with United.
Noble actually tweeted how gutted he was to see Diangana leave the club back in 2020, while he went on the record to praise the winger as recently as this year, stating that he could be a £50m player.
Diangana is clearly a player Noble rates very highly, and with the attacker currently playing Championship football with West Brom, bringing him back to his former club shouldn’t be too difficult a task.
Noble loves Diangana, and while it may not be the most inspiring signing from the fanbase’s point of view, it’s ultimately now Noble’s decision who West Ham go out and pursue in the transfer market.
Whether or not Diangana would be a good signing for West Ham is up for debate, but their new Sporting Director certainly rates him highly, and it wouldn’t shock us at all if he made a move for his former teammate in the January transfer window.
