Liverpool fans have been left shocked after Sergio Ramos was left out of Spain’s squad for the upcoming European Championships.
Whilst Liverpool’s midfield technician, Thiago, will be gracing one of the great tournaments after being called up by Luis Enrique, it won’t be the case for Ramos.
Given the COVID situation, teams are allowed to select 26 players rather than the usual 23, but ex-Barcelona boss, Enrique, has opted to pick 24, leave out Ramos and select no Real Madrid players.
This now means that two of the great centre-backs – Virgil van Dijk and Ramos – won’t be gracing the European stage this summer.
Of course, for Van Dijk, it’s for much different reasons, with the Dutchman still recovering from his injury.
But Ramos, who has had his moments with Liverpool, especially that Champions League final, will have to do with watching from home.
Given that Ramos is Spain’s captain and all-time appearance-maker, it is a bit extreme to go from him being in the squad to being dropped altogether.
Lack of game time hasn’t helped, but there are two spots available and Enrique isn’t exactly going to lose an arm by selecting the aggressive-natured defender, even if injuries flare up again.
Either way, it caught the attention of Liverpool supporters, who shared their thoughts below:
