Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to react after seeing Nathaniel Clyne take part in the Under-23 clash between the Reds and Crystal Palace.

What’s the story?

Well, the Liverpool fans had their attention caught by a photo posted by Under-23 prospect James Balagizi.

Liverpool won the game 2-0, but supporters couldn’t believe their eyes when they saw Clyne marking Balagizi in the photo.

The 30-year-old left Anfield in 2020 when his contract expired, before returning to Crystal Palace on a free transfer.

It was back to where it all started for Clyne, as he rose through the youth ranks at Selhurst Park at the beginning of his career.

The 14-cap England international was a major part of Jürgen Klopp’s squad in the German’s early days at Anfield.

In total, Clyne made 103 appearances for Liverpool, before Trent Alexander-Arnold took his place at right-back.

Another ex-Liverpool man also took part in the game, as Martin Kelly got a runout.

He may have been largely forgotten about thanks to the emergence of Alexander-Arnold, but Clyne should be held in high regards by the Liverpool supporters.

The south Londoner brought calm to the right-back position, and was one of the most reliable players under Klopp in the early days.

Clyne also played a key role as the Reds reached the League Cup final in 2016, as well as the Europa League final.

Ultimately, injuries got the better of him at Anfield, and it’s sad to see him now playing Under-23 football for Crystal Palace.

With Joel Ward and Nathan Ferguson also vying for a position at right-back under Patrick Vieira, his chances of first-team action seem slim.

For now, let’s see what the Liverpool fans on Twitter have been saying about Clyne…
