Arsenal fans have taken to Twitter to react after Jorginho spoke to The Telegraph, and Bukayo Saka was mentioned.
What’s the story?
Well, in a lengthy interview, the £57m Chelsea man discussed how it felt to miss his penalty in the EURO 2020 final against England.
After Jordan Pickford saved Jorginho’s effort, it was down to Arsenal forward Saka to keep the Three Lions in the game.
However, the 20-year-old saw his penalty saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma.
When walking back to the halfway line, Jorginho said he was relieved when he saw it was Saka up against Donnarumma, in comments that some Chelsea fans have perceived as a dig at the Arsenal man.
The Telegraph quote the Italian as saying: “I just thought ‘f***, I disappointed my team-mates’ because they trusted me so much in that moment. Then, when I walked back, and it was a long, long walk, I looked and saw it was Saka and Gigio [Donnarumma] and I was pretty sure he was going to save it. I was like ‘it’s OK, it’s done’.”
The fact he decided it was ‘done’ after seeing Saka holding the ball can certainly be interpreted as a dig, although we don’t see it that way.
Jorginho wasn’t criticising Bukayo Saka
In our view, Jorginho was more confident in Donnarumma’s ability to save penalties, rather than being dismissive of Saka’s talents.
After all, the Paris Saint-Germain glovesman also saved Jadon Sancho’s spot kick, and went on to be named Player of the Tournament.
Clearly, Donnarumma is a wonderful shot-stopper, and Jorginho was merely emphasising that rather than taking aim at Saka.
If it was a genuine criticism of Saka, then the Chelsea man doesn’t exactly have a leg to stand on, as he also missed his penalty!
