Arsenal fans have taken to Twitter to react after Tottenham released a strongly worded statement about the postponed north London derby.
What’s the story?
Well, Arsenal appealed to the Premier League for a postponement due to a number of absentees in Mikel Arteta’s squad.
The Gunners are struggling for numbers due to COVID-19, injuries and also the Africa Cup of Nations.
As a result, their appeal was successful, much to the bemusement of Tottenham who expressed their shock in a club statement.
Spurs state they were “surprised” to see the Premier League grant Arsenal’s wishes to have the game postponed, citing the fact they were effectively kicked out of the Europa League despite finding themselves in a similar situation.
In fairness, Antonio Conte’s side make a good point.
Clearly, Spurs are furious at both Arsenal and the Premier League.
How should the Premier League react after postponing Arsenal vs Tottenham?
In our view, the Premier League need to provide more clarity on the situation.
If the majority of absentees is down to COVID-19, then a postponement is necessary to stop the spread of the virus, obviously.
However, if there’s just one positive case – for example – and the remaining absentees are thanks to injuries or suspension, then the game has to go ahead.
Since when did we start to postpone fixtures because of a few injury issues?
In our view, some proof needs to be shown from now on.
Postponing games only started to happen during the peak of the Omicron variant, and now that has died down, the Premier League must be bolder.
If not, the credibility of this season will disappear.
