Arsenal supporters have reacted with surprise after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang stated that Aston Villa’s Tyrone Mings has been his toughest opponent.
Barcelona’s new superstar is now showcasing his magic in Spain, but during his career, he has performed in France, Germany and England.
Despite coming up against some fearsome opponents from Mats Hummels to Virgil van Dijk, it’s Villa’s towering centre-back that has seemingly caused him the biggest trouble, as he told Mundo Deportivo.
These comments from Aubameyang have caught the eye of Arsenal supporters and it’s fair to say they weren’t expecting him to put Mings’ name forward.
Some are questioning whether their former captain, who scored a hat-trick for Barcelona over the weekend, is actually on the wind-up.
Mings is an England international and he did help Villa secure 15 clean sheets last season, but he still remains a marmite-like figure when he performs out on the pitch.
Whilst Arsenal fans are shocked by Aubameyang’s comments, it would no doubt be a huge compliment to the player himself.
During the five games Mings has faced Aubameyang, Villa have won three games and lost two – all three wins have resulted in the Midlands side keeping clean sheets.
One particular game, after project restart, saw Mings joking around with the Gabon star during a corner for Villa, before sprinting off, heading the ball towards goal and the rebound landing at Trezeguet’s feet and he scored the winning goal.
That moment, which went viral on social media, was touched upon by the Arsenal supporters.
