Wayne Rooney has warned Dele Alli in the Times that there will be ‘no way back’ for him under Jose Mourinho at Tottenham if his performance and effort levels drop from his recent goal-scoring display against Maccabi Haifa.

There has been a lot of noise around Alli in recent weeks, which has resulted in Mourinho dropping him from various matchday squads and speculation about his future hitting the rooftops of various European clubs.

One club, who are seemingly hearing the noises coming from North London, are the heavily-financed French champions Paris Saint-Germain, who according to the Telegraph, remain interested in the 24-year-old before Monday’s deadline.

But Rooney, who worked under Mourinho during his time at Old Trafford, had a forthright message for Alli amid rumours about his future and stated that the outspoken coach will ‘rub his hands and move on’ with the attacking midfielder if he doesn’t follow his way.

“José Mourinho is as single-minded as any manager I’ve had,” Rooney told the Times. “He’s ruthless. If you’re honest in your effort with José, you’ll be fine but if you’re not putting in the work you’ve got no chance.

“I think that’s what Dele Alli is discovering. It was great seeing Dele back on the pitch, playing well and scoring against Maccabi Haifa on Thursday but he’ll have to keep that going — if not, there’ll be no way back for him.

“If he doesn’t think Dele is doing enough in training or performing to the right standard on the pitch, knowing José he will rub his hands and move on.”

Despite the interest from across the English channel, it seems as though Alli will remain on English shores and look to fight his way back into Mourinho’s set-up.

He came off the bench, and scored a late penalty, as Spurs more than comfortably booked their spot in the Europa League group stages on Thursday.

One player Alli should look towards is a certain Tanguy Ndombele, who was on the back end of similar criticism from Mourinho, but he has since bounced back.

Alli needs to do the same, else his future in North London will be over before he knows it, and with it, his chances of regaining his international spot for England will forever be a thing of the past.
