Liverpool should consider Celtic’s impressive Croatian defender Jozo Simunovic as a cut priced alternative to Virgil Van Dijk.

Steven Gerrard told The Mail this week he wishes Liverpool signed Virgil Van Dijk from Celtic in 2015, hailing the defender’s ‘fantastic’ performances for the club.

Van Dijk signed for Southampton and was lined up for a £60 million move to Anfield this week before the Reds backed out, issuing a public apology to the Saints after being accused of tapping up one of their players.

With new targets now required, there is a chance for Liverpool to make good on their error – and raid Celtic two years on, this time for defender Jozo Simunovic.

Available at a fraction of the price, Simunovic has had a terrific season at Celtic where he played a key role in their unbeaten domestic season, consigning Kolo Toure to the sidelines.

Simunovic, 22, has been called into Croatia’s senior international squad and is hoping to soon get his first start for his country.

A switch to Liverpool would only enhance his international ambitions, and given Jurgen Klopp’s record of developing talent, Simunovic can grow into an even better player.

He is already attracting interest from Premier League sides, with The Mail reporting West Bromwich Albion, Crystal Palace and Newcastle United are all keen, along with long standing admirers Torino.

Celtic only just held him back from leaving last summer, and sooner or later, it is a matter of time before he moves on.

Liverpool would be smart to cut out the middle man and take a chance on the talented Croatian this summer.
