Anderlecht’s season lurched from bad to worse on Wednesday night, as they were hammered 3-0 by Celtic in the Champions League.

The Belgian outfit not only lie seventh in the Jupiler Pro League, but recently sacked manager Rene Weiler after a disappointing start to the season.

Anderlecht were looking for a boost as they took on Celtic on Wednesday night, but they were hammered 3-0 at the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium.

Leigh Griffiths swept home Kieran Tierney’s cross to give Celtic a 1-0 lead, and Patrick Roberts’ strike deflected into the net via Kara Mbodj to put Celtic 2-0 up.

Scott Sinclair then rounded off the win with a third goal late on, leaving Anderlecht in tatters after a dreadful evening, symptomatic of their start to the season.

Everton will have been paying close attention to the game given that Henry Onyekuru – who signed for Everton over the summer before being loaned out to Anderlecht – started the game.

The Nigerian forward has been touted for a huge future after hitting 24 goals for KAS Eupen last season, but his performance against Celtic suggested that he still has some developing to do before he is ready for the Premier League.

Onyekuru failed to register a single shot on goal, touched the ball just 36 times in 90 minutes, had a passing success rate of less than 69% and was dispossessed five times – the highest tally in the Anderlecht side.

Everton won’t be too worried about one poor game from Onyekuru, but his stats may well suggest that a loan move to Anderlecht was needed for the sake of his development, even in testing circumstances.
