Newcastle United might now be one of the richest sports clubs in the world, but even they must be taking a double-take on FC Barcelona star Pedri’s new reported release clause.
As reported by Fabrizio Romano, the Spanish international is close to signing a new contract with Barcelona which will include a ridiculous €1bn (£850m) release clause.
The release clause could make Pedro technically the joint-most valuable player in world football. As reported by the Guardian, Karim Benzema also has an exit option worth €1bn.
With Newcastle’s owners estimated to have a net worth of £320bn, even Pedri might be seen as too pricey an option for the northeast club.
Since the PIF takeover, Newcastle have been linked with what feels like every player under the sun. From Mauro Icardi to Gareth Bale to even Harry Kane.
Yet despite Newcastle’s gold mine of a fortune, a move for Pedri seems off the cards for now. Moreover, the midfielder is viewed as untouchable for the UEFA Champions League giants, and it’s represented in the teenager’s massive release clause.
Newcastle fans can’t believe Pedri release clause set by Barcelona

Indeed, as you would expect, Newcastle fans were joking around on social media that their new owners could activate Pedri’s new ludicrous release clause.
Here’s what some Newcastle supporters had to say on Twitter about Pedri’s £850m-rated release clause…
