Liverpool beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 in midweek for what was their first Premier League victory since before Christmas.
It was a must-win game for the Reds in the context of their title defence.
Spurs away represented a huge test, but it was one that Liverpool passed with flying colours as Jurgen Klopp’s side moved four points behind leaders Manchester City at the time.
The Anfield side have been without their best two centre-backs – Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez – for most of the campaign and neither look like returning until the 2021-22 season.
But Klopp has also had to contend with injuries to Diogo Jota and Thiago Alcantara to name a few more.
And Paul Merson has absolutely praised Liverpool for their resilience, arguing that ‘no other team in the whole country’ could suffer the same number of injuries and still challenge for a league title.
He told Sky Sports: “I think they’re back. They’re a good team and they’ve got too many good players. They’ve had 20 different partnerships at the back and they’re in the title race.
“No other team in the whole country would be able to do that, there’s no doubt about that.”
Merson is a million percent spot-on here, it has to be said.
Jota, Thiago, Van Dijk and Gomez have all missed more games than they’ve featured in, and then you have to consider the fact that Fabinho isn’t even playing in his best position, and Joel Matip has been dipping in and out of the treatment room all season.
They’ve done phenomenally well and if Klopp can deliver another title, it’ll blow last season’s achievement out of the water.
