Danny Mills has claimed that ‘no-one’ will pay £50 million for Mesut Ozil and believes the Arsenal man is worth around £10-15 million, as he told Sky Sports News (21/07/20 at 11:50 am).
Ozil is clearly out-of-favour at Arsenal and was once again left out of their most recent matchday squad – their 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa on Tuesday night.
For some fans, the writing is on the wall for Ozil in regards to his future, but for others could this potentially be a scenario where Mikel Arteta is testing the German to try and get a reaction out of him? If so, it clearly isn’t working.
Former England defender, Mills, shared his thoughts on Ozil, but he warned Arsenal that even if they do sell him it won’t provide them with the budget they crave for in the transfer market.
“If Ozil is going to leave, and the reports are that he’s on £300+ a week, no-one is going to pay £50 million for Ozil,” Mills told Sky Sports.
“You are almost going to have to give him away. You know, £10-15 million pounds. And pay a massive chunk of his wages and that eats into the budget.
“We have heard from Mikel Arteta that things are going to be tight-ish. Arsenal aren’t going to have huge amounts of money to spend. So, even if you get rid of Ozil, you are not going to have a huge amount of money to spend from the sale of that transfer.”
Arteta isn’t the first manager who has left Ozil out of his matchday squad on a number of occasions – Unai Emery did just that, as did Arsene Wenger during the latter stages of his tenure at the Emirates Stadium.
It could be argued that the writing has been on the wall for a long time for Ozil, who has been a marmite-like figure during his time in North London – he was purchased for £42 million from Real Madrid in 2013 [BBC Sport].
On occasions, he has shown sheer class when on form, but then he’s looked utterly anonymous during certain big away games.
