David Hay has suggested in The Glasgow Evening Times that Celtic do not need to sign Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard in the January transfer window.

Gerrard is on the books of Los Angeles Galaxy at the moment and has a contract until December 2016, according to Transfermarkt.co.uk.

According to a recent report in The Daily Record, the English midfielder could move to Scottish Premiership giants Celtic in the January transfer window.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers and Gerrard worked together at Liverpool and almost won the Premier League title during the 2013-14 season.

Former Celtic midfielder and manager Hay believes that the Bhoys do not need to sign the 36-year-old former Liverpool midfielder.

The 68-year-old has also given suggestion to the Glasgow giants regarding the type of players they need to sign in January.

“Celtic are going to in the league and I think they are going to win the treble,” Hay wrote in The Glasgow Evening Times. “I’ve not said that before with as much conviction but I truly believe it now. I really think they can do it, and I think they can do it without Steven Gerrard.”

“Now is the time to be looking to strengthen the squad for next season, and it wouldn’t be the worst idea to try and get players in during January that they can bed in during the second half of the campaign for the long-term,” added Hay. “From a Champions League perspective I think there are areas that Celtic could do with strengthening.

“They need two central midfield players, an authoritative one and a creative one, and another striker. These are the three key areas that they have to address to move onto the next level.”

Celtic are firm favourites to win the Scottish Premiership title this season. There is a very good chance that the Hoops will also clinch the Scottish League Cup and the Scottish Cup this campaign.

Gerrard would be a brilliant signing for Celtic in the January transfer window. While the Hoops are the strongest side in the Scottish Premiership even without the former England international midfielder, the Liverpool legend’s arrival at Celtic Park would raise the team’s profile and would also help qualify for the 2017-18 Champions League group stage.
