Speaking on The Red Agenda Podcast, journalist James Pearce has outlined Liverpool’s transfer strategy going forward.
Liverpool had quite a quiet summer transfer window, signing just one senior player in the shape of Ibrahima Konate.
This quiet window has led to many Reds supporters speculating that next summer could be a big one, with #Mbappe2022 being a popular tongue-in-cheek trend amongst the fanbase.
However, Pearce says that signings like Mbappe aren’t going to happen, claiming that Liverpool will look to make more additions similar to Diogo Jota.

Pearce spoke about the links to Mbappe.
“I don’t see Mbappe, I think him on a free to Real Madrid next summer is the most likely outcome. It just shows the disparity on modern football where PSG are turning down the best part of €200m for someone they could lose on a free in six months,” Pearce said.
“We spoke about it a few weeks back. I don’t see under FSG the model changing, by and large they will target players below that bracket of the absolute elite. Signing players effectively like what Salah, Mane and Firmino were before Liverpool signed them. That is where Liverpool and their data analysis departments will continue to target, Diogo Jota is a good example of that isn’t he?”
Best way forward
Mbappe may be a brilliant footballer, but Liverpool aren’t a club that can afford to make these types of signings.
Their best bet going forward is to continue uncovering gems such as Jota, Salah and Mane, but they may find it tough if Michael Edwards does end up leaving the club.
Let’s see what Liverpool do next summer, because they’ll surely be looking at adding a new attacker in 12 months’ time.
