No key passes, no shots, no dribbles: Son Heung-min was invisible last night

Tottenham Hotspur lost 2-1 to Aston Villa on Wednesday evening, with much of the focus on Harry Kane.

Kane didn’t have the best of games as speculation surrounds his future, and that could have been his final home game for Spurs.

Yet Kane wasn’t the most disappointing Spurs attacker, and it certainly wasn’t Steven Bergwijn given that he was Tottenham’s only threat.

No, the most disappointing player was Son Heung-min, who offered pretty much nothing during Tottenham’s defeat.

Son’s stats yesterday were dismal. No shots on target, not even a shot at all. No successful dribbles, no successful crosses, no key passes, just… nothing.

There were a number of occasions where Son was one-on-one with his full back, but rather than run at them and attack the space, he played it safe and went backwards.

This isn’t what Spurs fans have been used to with Son, who is usually one of Tottenham’s most reliable attacking threats.

Maybe it was just an end-of-season down game for Son, but there may be lingering fears that his focus was hampered a little by the Kane rumours.

Kane and Son have been a devastating duo in recent years, but if Kane is to move on, Spurs need Son to step up as their new talisman – not fade into the background as he did against Villa.
