Glenn Murray has shut down claims from Chris Sutton that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s poor form for Arsenal is down to his new deal.
The Brighton player, who is on-loan at Watford, told BBC Radio 5 Live that he thinks it is more down to the fact that Arsenal’s style of play ‘doesn’t suit him’.
Aubameyang hasn’t scored from open since the opening day of the season and Arsenal’s pretty dull, lifeless and energy-less start to the campaign is mirrored by his form – he penned a new deal in September.
Whilst Murray hasn’t performed at the level of Aubameyang during his career, he still understands what a striker goes through when he is going through a bad period, as he seemingly defended Arsenal’s hitman.
“No, it cannot have anything to do with the deal,” said Murray. “As a striker and when you have such a good goals record in the Premier League and your career in general. The last thing you want to do is lose that.
“It’s difficult to get it back as we are seeing it now. I cannot say that the contract has got anything to do with it.
“I also feel the style of football doesn’t suit him so much because they have got a slower build-up. He likes to play on the shoulder and he wants space to run into. At the minute, he hasn’t got that. There are so many players around him. By the time they play the ball through the third then there is no space left for him.”
In the near future, Arsenal will be pretty hesitant in offering their star players big-money deals because it seemingly ends in disaster.
Mesut Ozil was the last player who was handed such a deal and he cannot even make Arsenal’s 25-man squad.
Arsenal fans will be praying that a bit of luck or just a goal out of nothing will help elevate Aubameyang’s game because if the £56 million speedster [BBC Sport] can get going then the pressure will be lifted off Mikel Arteta.
