Jamie Carragher has agreed with Tony Bellew’s claim that Dominic Calvert-Lewin would start for Liverpool ahead of Roberto Firmino, whilst they were speaking on Ladsbible TV.
The former retired cruiserweight and heavyweight boxer claimed that there are ‘no ifs or buts’ in Calvert-Lewin getting into Liverpool’s XI.
Both Calvert-Lewin and Firmino are completely different forwards, with one being a more robust aerial machine, whilst the other likes getting into pockets and using his twinkle toes to get the best out of others.
Carragher shared that he is a ‘big fan’ of Calvert-Lewin, and whilst he agreed with Bellew, he did make it clear that both Everton and Liverpool have two completely different styles.
“Dominic Calvert-Lewin is taking Firmino’s place,” said Bellew. “There’s no ifs or buts there. He scores more goals and he is more prominent. He doesn’t set up enough goals that Firmino will.
“But I don’t care. When you play up front, what do you want from your forward? You want goals.”
“Liverpool goals come from wide areas,” said Carragher. “So Liverpool are set up slightly differently. I agree with you in terms of Calvert-Lewin. But he is completely different to Firmino, so it’s a difficult one.
“You wouldn’t want Firmino in the Everton team with the way Everton play, you would want Calvert-Lewin. But in the Liverpool team, you want Firmino because of their strikers being out wide.
“I think that could be a strong argument. I am a really big fan of Calvert-Lewin.”

Last season, Calvert-Lewin bagged his best season as a profession when he scored 16 Premier League goals (transfermarkt) – only Mohamed Salah in the Liverpool team outscored him.
There’s no doubt that the 24-year-old is a thriving player and someone who is becoming one of the top marksmen in England’s top-flight.
But Firmino would rightly point towards his Premier League and Champions League medals as proof that he is ahead of the Englishman.
Although, on form, DCL has been ahead of the quick-footed Brazilian, who suffered a number of difficult spells last term.
