Michael Dawson has claimed that rumoured Newcastle United target, Dan Burn, won’t help them survive the drop, as he told Sky Sports (29/01/22 at 2:05 pm).
The former Premier League defender claimed that Brighton’s hard-hitting centre-back is an ‘incredible’ player, but not the saving grace Newcastle need.
Less than 48 hours remain before the January transfer window slams shut and Newcastle are set to be one of the busiest teams up until the deadline.
A central defender is much-needed at St James’ Park and it seems as though the Magpies are pushing hard to sign boyhood Toon fan, Burn, from Brighton, as reported by Sky Sports.
The Magpies have already had a bid rejected by the Seagulls, but it wouldn’t be a surprise if Burn is in the black and white stripes once again by Tuesday.
If he is, then Dawson doesn’t think he will be an answer to Eddie Howe’s constant and error-prone problems at the back, despite rating him as a player.
“He has been incredible for Brighton since they signed him from Wigan for £4 million,” said Dawson.
“You fit a club at times. You see him at Fulham and you see him at Wigan. Do I see him as the saviour for Newcastle? No, I don’t.
“I don’t think you can put all your eggs in one basket and go ‘Dan Burn’s going to be changing grace for Newcastle and keep us up’.
“He makes incredible tackles. He is quick. He can play left-back, so I think that’s a positive as well.”
At first, Burn’s tall frame might fool some into thinking he would be slow on the ball and technically a little off.
But, he is far from it because he is a lot quicker with and without the ball than many think and is technically outstanding.
A lot of that bodes down to how he reads the game and the aggressive nature in which he protects his own final third.
If Howe manages to snap him up, then what will also be an added bonus is the fact that he can switch to left-back if needed.
