Graham Roberts says James Maddison of Tottenham Hotspur is the ‘bargain’ transfer signing, not West Ham United’s James Ward-Prowse.
The English duo were relegated last season, with Leicester City and Southampton, respectively, and it was clear once that happened that they were both going to leave and return to the Premier League this summer.
Tottenham snapped up James Maddison for a £40 million fee (Sky Sports), with Roberts stating that he is the ‘bargain of the season’.
The Spurs legend added on Twitter that James Ward-Prowse, who moved to West Ham United, for £30 million (BBC Sport), is a ‘good player as well’, just not in the Maddison bracket.
With Euro 2024 around the corner, the duo, albeit with different styles of play, will be fighting for those England midfield spots.
Maddison made the squad for the 2022 Qatar World Cup, whilst Ward-Prowse missed out and now they will be hoping to make a cut that has a strong group of players fighting for it.
“No, Maddison is the bargain of the season,” responded Roberts in response to it possibly being James Ward-Prowse.
“Ward-Prowse is a good player as well.”
Strong starts for Maddison and Ward-Prowse
The duo have two things in common, they both provided two assists on their Tottenham and West Ham debuts.
Spurs recorded a 2-2 draw at Brentford, whilst the Hammers beat London rivals Chelsea in front of their own supporters.
And since then, Maddison and Ward-Prowse have also opened their accounts, once again, on the same weekend and on the South Coast.
