Since Sergi Canos joined Brentford permanently in the January transfer window, it is safe to say that things have not exactly gone to plan for the winger at Griffin Park.

In nine Championship appearances for the Bees, he has contributed just one assist and has, so far, failed to find the back of the net. With that kind of return, Leeds may be relieved about the action they took in January.

According to a report in the Yorkshire Evening Post, the Whites wanted to land the Spaniard, but were not prepared to pay Norwich City the £2.5 million asking price they slapped on him, and were instead hoping to sign him on loan until the end of the season.

But with Brentford set to find the funds that would have allowed them to reach that asking price – the Yorkshire Evening Post reported that Scott Hogan’s departure would set up a deal – Leeds would have known that, in all likelihood, their chances of landing him probably depended on whether they were willing to pursue a permanent deal.

However, they decided to resist any urge to get involved in a potential bidding war, seemingly leaving the path clear for Brentford to complete a deal after they made a bid that met the Canaries’ asking price (via Sky Sports).

While the players that Garry Monk brought in – seemingly as alternative targets based on their positions – are yet to really make a major impression at Elland Road, the fact that Alfonso Pedraza and Mo Barrow have only joined on loan means that Leeds will not have any hassle trying to get them off the books if they do not prove themselves.

Meanwhile, Canos’ chances of success may now be damaged further with the wide-man potentially starting to feel the pressure to perform given the money that Brentford spent on signing him in January.
