Manchester United defeated Liverpool on Sunday and Ander Herrera was particularly impressive for the visitors.
Manchester United had so many impressive players against Liverpool on Sunday that it would be easy to forget just how good some of them were.
Juan Mata stole the headlines with his brace while Marouane Fellaini impressed once again and Antonio Valencia was solid throughout, but summer signing Ander Herrera also had a game to remember.
The 25-year-old impressed in his early matches at United before a rib injury curtailed his progress.
When he returned to fitness, Herrera was only used sparingly and had to make do with prolonged spells on the bench, but not anymore, and on Sunday he proved categorically that he has what it takes to play in this United midfield.
An away match against Liverpool is a test for the best in that position so Herrera can hold his head high after a job well done.
Herrera has started United’s last five league matches but this was arguably the pick of the bunch.
His passing accuracy of 87 per cent was good considering the contest and his composure showed in the fact that he was dispossessed only once in 83 minutes.
| Passing Accuracy | Goal Assists | Key Passes | Shots | Dispossessed | Tackles Won | Interceptions Won | Duels Won | Mins Played | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ander Herrera | 87% | 1 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 4 | 4 | 11 | 83 |
Herrera set up Mata for the first goal with a fine through-ball and he played two key passes in total, as well as having one shot of his own.
But as creative as he was, he also got stuck in, winning four tackles, four interceptions and an impressive 11 duels.
In short Herrera was brilliant, as were many of his teammates, and if he can maintain this form until the end of the season United may not stop at fourth.
