Memphis Depay, John Terry and Celtic’s Nir Bitton were just some current and former players who reacted to the news that Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Following Liverpool’s announcement on Twitter that Van Dijk will need surgery on his knee, the Dutchman then posted on Instagram that he is ‘fully focused’ in doing ‘everything’ in his power to get back as quickly as possible.

In the comments section, ex-Premier League winger Depay wrote: ‘No doubt about it brother. You are going to come back a different beast’.

Aston Villa coach, Terry simply stated: ‘Get well soon mate’. Whilst Celtic defender Bitton added by saying: ‘Speedy recovery ma man’.

All of this comes after one of the most dramatic and controversial Merseyside derbies in recent years, which has potentially ended Van Dijk’s season.

He was on the end of a horror tackle from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, who amazingly wasn’t even sent off for his actions.

It has sparked a huge outcry as to why the Everton man wasn’t punished, as Jurgen Klopp now has to defend the Premier League title without his consistent rock at the back.

Liverpool’s trophies under Jurgen Klopp

  1. Champions League

    2018/19

  2. UEFA Super Cup

    2019

  3. FIFA Club World Cup

    2019

  4. Premier League

    2019/20

For Liverpool, whilst this is utterly devastating news, they have no choice but to focus on more pressing matters on the pitch because the Champions League resumes this week.

If the Reds can get through these tough few months then that January transfer window is going to be crucial in trying to bring in a top-quality replacement.
