Paul Merson has claimed that the gulf between Liverpool and Manchester City’s squads is ‘scary’ – and proof of that is Jurgen Klopp playing James Milner recently.

The former midfielder told Sky Sports that Liverpool won’t pip Manchester City to the Premier League title.

There is hope that if the Reds can beat Southampton on Tuesday night, then Aston Villa – led by Steven Gerrard – will provide them with a helping hand on the final day of the season.

During this campaign, with the addition of Ibrahima Konate and Luis Diaz – Liverpool have started to creep towards – or even surpassed – the depth in quality Pep Guardiola can pick from.

But Merson is firmly in the camp that Manchester City are still far ahead in that regard, so it’s ‘even more unbelievable’ that this side are still battling for every single competition.

“To do what they’ve done in the league over nine months in all competitions is just mind-blowing,” said Merson. “And they haven’t got the biggest squad.

“No disrespect but you’re bringing on James Milner in the FA Cup final. He’s 37. It’s not like bringing Ilkay Gundogan, Bernardo Silva or Riyad Mahrez on.

“The gulf between the two squads is scary so for Liverpool to do what they’ve done is even more unbelievable.”

JAMES MILNER STILL GOING STRONG AT 36

Over the weekend, when Liverpool lifted the FA Cup, Milner came off the bench after 76 minutes and produced a solid display for his team as they lifted another trophy.

Ever since the £140k-a-week man (Spotrac) swapped Manchester City colours for those of Liverpool’s, he has once again answered why.

At the Etihad, he lifted the Premier League title, and could have added more if he stayed on.

But, at Anfield, he has that all-important Champions League medal around his neck – and he can add a second in Paris against Real Madrid.
