Paul Merson has claimed that Liverpool duo James Milner and Jordan Henderson wouldn’t start for Merseyside rivals, Everton.

Prior to Liverpool’s quite remarkable 9-0 win over Bournemouth on Saturday, the Reds had started the new Premier League season winless and they had a midfield that was raising more questions than providing answers.

Given injury issues to certain players, it meant that Jurgen Klopp was forced to play stalwarts Henderson and Milner together.

As the duo proved during their defeat at Manchester United, it’s something that just work and a pairing that Klopp simply can’t play again.

Despite that 9-0 win, it shouldn’t paper over the cracks that another midfielder should be added to the club’s ranks before the summer transfer window slams shut on Thursday.

When talking about Henderson and Milner, former Arsenal and Aston Villa midfielder Merson meant ‘no disrespect’ when he thinks they wouldn’t play for Everton, as he told Sky Sports News.

“Henderson and Milner playing in midfield together, no disrespect to them two, they are great pros and have been top-draw players,” said Merson.

“But I don’t think they would be playing for Everton, if they were playing. That’s my opinion. And they were playing for Liverpool.”

A TRANSFER SURPRISE FROM LIVERPOOL?

Klopp has changed his mind and informed the fans that Liverpool will dip into the market for another midfielder this summer.

The only issue is that he has changed his mind so late on in the window and now they only have a few days to get a possible deal done.

The obvious name that the Anfield faithful want on their doorsteps is rising superstar, Jude Bellingham, but there is no way Borussia Dortmund let him go so late on.

Perhaps a Youri Tielemans could be an option, but he is a very different player to Bellingham, although, from a technical standpoint, he would be a very good option for Klopp in the middle of the park.
