Paul Merson has claimed that Harry Kane ‘doesn’t trust’ Tottenham trio Oliver Skipp, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Giovani Lo Celso to provide him with chances to score, as he told Sky Sports.
The TV pundit feels that Kane, who only has one Premier League goal this season, is only ‘as good as the players that provide you’.
Under Nuno Espirito Santo, it has been a real struggle for Kane, with last season’s Golden Boot winner only managing to score a league goal against Newcastle.
What makes matters worse is the manner of performances from the England captain, there have been many occasions where he just hasn’t looked like he has been in the game.
All of this hasn’t been made good reading for the hitman, who has had to resort to the domestic and European games, in the so-called lesser competitions, in order to showcase something.
Nonetheless, given the lack of creative talent in Tottenham’s midfield, Merson was pretty blunt when talking about Kane.
“You are only as good as the players that provide you,” said Merson. “I don’t care who you are.
“The players he has got behind him, no disrespect, in Skipp, Hojbjerg and Lo Celso, they aren’t put the ball through the eye of the needle. They are holding midfielder players.
“They’re not Christian Eriksen – I understand where Harry Kane is coming from. He is dropping off. He doesn’t trust the players that are playing in midfield. I am sorry, he doesn’t and he’s not getting the service.
“It’s okay saying ‘staying in the box’. But they have to get up the pitch first.”

Whilst Antonio Conte has been brought in to revitalise this struggling and morale-sapped Tottenham team.
They also need to look at themselves in the mirror because Kane is experienced enough to admit that his below-par performances have been his own fault this season.
The build-up to the new campaign didn’t help anyone’s cause and all that speculation surrounding it.
Once again, that is Kane’s doing and it has affected Spurs, now it’s time for Conte to pick up the pieces and ensure that the cracks don’t show themselves again.
