Paul Ince slammed Kalvin Phillips on Premier League Productions for his performance during Leeds United’s thumping 6-2 defeat against Manchester United on Sunday.
The former England captain thinks Phillips is a ‘wonderful’ player but the Leeds man lacked the ‘basics’ yesterday.
It was a pretty woeful start to proceeding for Leeds because they conceded two goals inside the first three minutes before conceding six overall, and in truth, it could and should have been a lot more.
Ince was a combative midfielder himself during his playing days and he wasn’t known as ‘the guvnor’ for nothing, as he shared his thoughts on Phillips’ performance in the number six role.
“You look at Phillips again,” said Ince. “He’s looked again then he’s looked at Fernandes and then he has just lost him. Then there’s Fernandes with a lovely shot in the bottom hand corner [for Man United’s third goal].
“No disrespect to Phillips, he is a wonderful player and this is the fourth goal [Lindelof]. He has had a hand in every four goals [in the first half].
“It’s basic, basic football and it’s okay being on the offensive and wanting to score goals. But you have to do things right. Midfield player, stay with your man. I think it’s poor, poor from Leeds.”

This game summed up the negative side to Leeds’ style of play and how they leave so many spaces around the park when they are going forward.
Manchester United well and truly punished their rivals inside an empty Old Trafford, and whilst the home fans will be disappointed they weren’t inside the stadium to watch the action unfold, the Leeds faithful will be glad they weren’t in the ground to witness such a thumping.
Luckily for Leeds, the festive period allows them to put this result and performance to one side in next to no time because the games are going to come thick and fast now.
