Tim Sherwood has criticised Tottenham Hotspur right-back Serge Aurier for showing ‘no desire’ in trying to stop Danny Ings’s opener for Southampton in North London Wednesday.
Tottenham came from behind to beat the Saints 2-1 and kick off Ryan Mason’s interim stint with a victory.
But Spurs were 1-0 down at the break after Ings – who is linked with a move to the Lilywhites – pulled away from Aurier to guide a header past Hugo Lloris on the half-hour mark.
Even under Mourinho and Mauricio Pochettino, the Ivory Coast international often struggled defensively.
And here’s what Sherwood said to Optus Sport about the former Paris Saint-Germain star’s performance against Southampton.
He said when asked about Tottenham’s set-piece issues: “It’s like that due to organisation, but also the desire to go and put your head on the first ball. Aurier had no desire to go and head that ball. Danny wanted to win that ball and he hasn’t had to do a lot.”
It wouldn’t be a huge surprise if Daniel Levy tries to sign an upgrade on Aurier during the summer, if we’re honest.
Matt Doherty was signed from Wolves last summer but the Irishman hasn’t proven himself that much better, it has to be said.
It’s a position that has cost Tottenham a lot of problems ever since selling Kyle Walker almost four years ago and it’s getting to the stage where it has to be resolved now.
