Sebastian Andersson was not short of offers during the summer transfer window.

After hitting 12 Bundesliga goals for a Union Berlin side who staved off the threat of relegation in surprisingly comfortable fashion, the late-blooming Swede allegedly had offers on the table from the likes of Celtic, Newcastle United, West Bromwich Albion and Leeds United (Kicker).

But Andersson instead opted to stay in Germany, moving to the Cathedral City once Cologne offered to pay £5.5 million for his services.

If the 6ft 3ins target man was hoping to fire this historic old club into Europa League contention, the reality is proving to be something rather different.

A 1-1 draw against Werder Bremen on Friday means Cologne are still awaiting their first win of the season, eight matches in.

Markus Gisdol’s side have picked up just three points from a possible 21 and last tasted victory all the way back in March – 17 games ago.

“We weren’t able to create much up front,” said a frustrated Andersson, who has scored just twice in seven matches this term and barely had a kick against Werder Bremen as Cologne threw away a one-goal lead to draw at home (GeissBlog).

“It is difficult to say what has to happen now during the international break. You can see that we have no self-confidence. We gave up the game completely after taking the lead.”

It is fair to say Celtic, with just two wins in their last seven games, have not exactly set the world alight in 2020/21.

Leeds, Newcastle and West Brom, meanwhile, are mired between 13th and 18th place after losing each of their matches this weekend.

But spare a thought for a £5.5 million summer target who must already be wondering if he has bet on the wrong horse.
