Long-term Manchester United target Leighton Baines has agreed a new four-year deal with Everton.

When David Moyes first arrived at Old Trafford, one Everton player was tipped to follow him more than any other. And it was not Marouane Fellaini.

Leighton Baines was linked with Manchester United long before Moyes took the helm, but upon his arrival the bids began, only to be swiftly rejected by his replacement at Goodison Park Roberto Martinez.

And now it appears those headlines linking the England full-back with a switch to the champions are a thing of the past, after it was confirmed Baines had signed a new deal with the Toffees.

It is a huge boost for a side very much on the up under the Spaniard. And Baines’ four-year deal should see him remain on Merseyside until he is 33.

Reports claim Moyes has already turned his attention to the younger but certainly not cheaper alternative of Luke Shaw. But it now seems that any hope he had of bringing Baines with him from his old club are officially over.
