Before Everton supporters rush to proclaim Sean Dyche the wrong man at the wrong time – Sam Allardyce 2.0 if you will – it’s worth casting your minds back to mid-March.

Less than two months ago, Dyche’s Burnley side was running rings round a team coached by former Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain boss Carlo Ancelotti, deservedly triumphing 2-1 on the blue half of Merseyside thanks to Dwight McNeil’s gorgeous left-foot lob.

Burnley’s gravel-voiced gaffer is about as unfashionable as they come, with his shaved head, beefy black coat and growling Kettering twang.

And while The Mirror reports Dyche is one of the names in contention to take over the suddenly available Everton hot seat, no-one at Turf Moor is suffering sleepless nights just yet.

Is Sean Dyche an Everton contender?

With the stylish Erik ten Hag, Paulo Fonseca and Roberto Martinez also in the frame, the Burnley fanbase are confident Dyche’s ‘unfashionable’ image will scare off a club that, epitomised by the acquisitions of Ancelotti and James Rodriguez, appears to be looking for something more glamorous.

But don’t believe the narrative. Modern-day Burnley are no potato-patch plodders plucked straight out of the mid-90s mudbaths.

Everton found that out the hard way in March.

Here’s what some Burnley fans had to say about the situation on Twitter:
