Leeds United’s reported quest to sign Matty Longstaff has ended in failure, as the midfielder has signed a new contract with Newcastle United.
Interest from Leeds United
Earlier this month, The Telegraph claimed of interest from Leeds in signing Longstaff on a free transfer.
The Whites will play in the Premier League next season after winning automatic promotion from the Championship, while the midfielder was out of contract at the Magpies.
The Times reported only this week that Leeds want the 20-year-old, adding that Italian club Udinese also want to secure the services of the England Under-20 international.
New Newcastle United contract
However, Newcastle have announced on their official website this morning that Longstaff has signed a new two-year contract.
The young midfielder is overjoyed to have committed his future to the Magpies.
Longstaff told Newcastle’s official website: “I’m delighted to have signed. It took a bit longer than I’d hoped but I’m really happy it’s done now, and I can’t wait to get back to playing at a full St. James’ Park hopefully soon.
“I spoke to Steve Bruce and we talked through it and it was a no-brainer after I spoke to him. He gave me my chance and I’m really looking forward to working with him and his coaching staff, who were all great with me.”
Sensible decision?
Leeds are a massive club, and Longstaff would have improved under head coach Marcelo Bielsa, who has made the likes of Liam Cooper and Kalvin Phillips better than they were two or so years ago.
However, staying at Newcastle means that the youngster will continue to play in familiar surroundings, and perhaps next season he will establish himself as a key figure in the first team.
