Speaking to Hampshire Live, James Ward-Prowse has been discussing a summer of transfer speculation that saw him strongly linked with a move to Aston Villa.

Villa had money to burn this summer after receiving a British-record fee for Jack Grealish, and at one point it was thought that they would splash out on Ward-Prowse.

While signing the Southampton man was a mouth-watering prospect, the move never came to fruition, and now the midfielder has commented on the interest shown in him.

What’s been said?

Ward-Prowse described the interest shown in him as a different challenge, but he says that staying at Southampton was a no-brainer in the end.

“It was the first time that I have faced that kind of speculation, so it was a different challenge,” he said.

“When I sat down and spoke with the club, it was immediately obvious that they were keen for everything to be sorted out.

“That was then a no-brainer for me. I love being here and to be a part of this club is really special,

“I’m pleased and really proud to continue this journey.”

Legend in the making

Ward-Prowse has committed himself to Southampton, and if he stays at St Mary’s for his whole career, he will undoubtedly go down as a club legend.

Southampton have seen so many talented players come and go in recent years, but throughout it all, Ward-Prowse has stayed on the south coast.

Matt Le Tissier stayed at Southampton for his whole career and became a legend, and it seems as though Ward-Prowse could be on that same path.
