Celtic’s Stephen Welsh has expressed his delight after scoring his first European goal.
The defender got on the scoresheet in the Hoops’ 3-2 win over Real Betis last night.
Welsh opened the scoring for Ange Postecoglou’s side after just three minutes after getting on the end of a Liel Abada corner.
Euan Henderson and David Turnbull got the other goals for Celtic in the second-half to seal an impressive victory.
Solid performance by Celtic’s Welsh
Welsh put in a solid performance at the back and spoke after the game about his goal, as per the club’s website:
“There’s no better feeling than scoring on a European night at Celtic Park. I really can’t describe it – it’s unbelievable.
“I think the boys dug in and it was really tough against a top side with great players. But we dug it out and the mentality is good in the squad.
“It was a tough game to come into but the boys that made their debuts put in some excellent performances and we need that. It will definitely give us a boost of confidence.
“We’ve got a good squad of players and real depth and that will be a good thing going forward as we have a busy month.”
Celtic’s future star
The centre-back is repaying Postecoglou’s faith in him this season and is becoming an influential member of the squad.
Welsh, 21, has made 39 appearances for Celtic in all competitions now since making his first-team debut in February 2020 against Hamilton Academical.
He looks poised to have a very bright future at Celtic Park ahead.
Chance for other Celtic fringe players
The Hoops used yesterday’s game against Real Betis to also give some fringe players the chance to impress.
Summer recruits Osaze Urghoghide and Liam Shaw have both had to bide their time for minutes since moving from Sheffield Wednesday but the pair had 90 minutes.
Liam Scales, who scored against Dundee United on his league debut last weekend, also played the full game.
