The South Korean scored Tottenham’s second at Wembley and could have had another moments later when his wonderful half-volley struck the crossbar.
It was a performance full of the pace and excitement that Spurs fans love in their attacking play.
And he will be straight back to the bench for the trip to Manchester United this weekend.
Because no matter how many goals he scores, he will never have the full trust of Mauricio Pochettino.
After scoring 21 goals last season, Son was out of the team for the opening two games of this term. He has started only four of Tottenham’s nine league matches, and not completed 90 minutes in any of them.
He was left out at Real Madrid while Moussa Sissoko and Fernando Llorente started.
Pochettino may believe in Son’s quality, but not in his stamina, bravery or industry; three attributes he values just as highly.
Son can continue to be an excellent squad player at Spurs, but that is all Pochettino will ever see him as.
This will be proved again when, after his best performance of the season, he is only a substitute at Old Trafford.
