The Swansea man made the most clearances, as Paul Clement’s men stunned Liverpool 3-2 at Anfield on Saturday.

Bottom of the table Swansea City sent shockwaves across the footballing landscape on Saturday lunchtime, as Paul Clements side recorded a stunning 3-2 victory against Liverpool at Anfield.

Fernando Llorente’s brace and Gylfi Sigurdsson’s winner were enough to take an unlikely three points back to South Wales – and Swansea out of the relegation zone.

It was, however, the performance of Swansea’s much-maligned defence, that held strong during a chaotic second half on Merseyside, which could yet be the making of one Alfie Mawson for The Swans.

Since making the switch from Barnsley in the final days of the summer transfer window, Mawson has been a regular fixture for all three of Swansea’s managers since making his debut in October.

Mawson’s performance against Liverpool, however, was a aerially assured one. As per Whoscored, the 23 year-old made the most clearances of an man of the pitch at Anfield.

Mawson showed he has an eye for goal in Swansea’s extraordinary 5-4 win against Crystal Palace earlier this season, confirmed his defensive maturity against Liverpool, making 10 clearances – one more than partner Federico Fernandez – as the duo won out in a frantic finale.

As the visitors retook the lead against the run of play through their Icelandic talisman Sigurdsson, Liverpool threw the kitchen sink at the Swans brittle defence. Each time however, Mawson and Fernandez got their heads to the ball first.

For London-born Mawson, his showing displayed the sort of promise that previous manager Francesco Guidolin had seen to bring him to the Liberty Stadium four months ago.

With a second win in three Premier League games, Paul Clement’s arrival has injected new life into Swansea City’s seemingly forlorn battle against the drop.

And performances from the likes of Mawson could give Swansea City fans hope that escape from relegation is still a possibility.
