Rangers rounded off their pre-season preparations on Sunday, beating Derby County 1-0 at Ibrox ahead of the new Scottish Premiership season.

The Gers have been playing pre-season games either side of their Europa League fixtures, and Derby were the final hurdle on Sunday.

Rangers claimed a narrow win in a somewhat underwhelming display, with Nikola Katic heading home the winner late in the day.

Katic will hope to have put forward his case to start against Kilmarnock next weekend, but he has new competition in the race to start at centre back.

Connor Goldson has remained at Ibrox, but Joe Worrall and Gareth McAuley have left, with George Edmundson and, more recently, Filip Helander coming in.

Swedish international Helander was an exciting £3million capture from Bologna, and many are expecting him to feature prominently alongside Goldson.

He played with Katic on Sunday, and the Croatian has admitted to The Scottish Sun that he thought his first start at Ibrox saw him play well against a strong opponent in Derby.

Katic noted that Helander is hugely experienced and has learned in the best league for defences, believing he’s a tactically astute player – but sent him a warning that playing for Rangers is different to any other club.

“Filip has a lot of experience and he’s played in Serie A, which in defensive styles, may be the best league,” said Katic. “There are a lot of tactics in Italy, and he has also played for his national team and in the Champions League. But when you arrive at Rangers it is different from other clubs. He did well against a good opponent,” hea dded.
