The New Orleans Pelicans might have a player who could end up resembling Nikola Jokic one day.

Things haven’t been going smoothly for the New Orleans Pelicans, and that trend continued in their recent game against Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets.

Even after making a change at head coach by letting Willie Green go, the Pelicans are still struggling to find wins, dropping another game to Denver 125-118.

But despite the loss, there was at least one positive takeaway for the Pelicans. One standout performance provided a bit of hope during an otherwise tough night.

Derik Queen poured in 30 points against the Denver Nuggets

Derik Queen, selected 13th overall in the 2025 NBA Draft, had his best game yet against Denver.

The 20-year-old centre finished with 30 points, nine rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals in just half an hour on the court. He was also incredibly efficient, shooting 66.7% from the field.

Although his career night didn’t lead to a Pelicans win, it showed once again what kind of potential he has. Queen is giving fans reasons to be excited about his future.

Nikola Jokic even spoke highly of him after the game, offering a comparison that’s bound to catch attention in New Orleans.

Nikola Jokic sees similarities between himself and Derik Queen

Right now, most NBA fans would tell you Jokic is the best player in the league. The three-time MVP is in the middle of another standout season and continues to set the standard for big men across the league.

With every team trying to find their own version of Jokic, it’s telling that the Nuggets star sees something familiar in Queen.

“He’s good, he has some moves, definitely crafty, he’s unorthodox, great touch around the rim, feel for the game. It’s good to see somebody different,” said Jokic after facing Queen. He continued: “I think I’m a little bit taller, but I think there is that style. I can see slow, crafty – yeah.”

That kind of praise carries weight, especially since Queen was already being called ‘Baby Jokic’ during his college days. Whether he can eventually take the Pelicans all the way to an NBA title remains to be seen.
