Kranjcar, who has appeared just once for Graeme Murty’s side in 2018, is in the final six months of his contract at Rangers.
Rangers midfielder Niko Kranjcar could retire from football at the end of his Ibrox contract this summer, according to his father.
Kranjcar has only played once for Rangers in 2018, helping Graeme Murty’s team to a comfortable 3-0 win against Fraserburgh at the end of last month.
The Croatia international missed the majority of his first season in Glasgow after rupturing his cruciate ligament, and his father Zlatko has revealed that he is still suffering the repercussions of that injury.
“After his major injury, he still gets a lot of pain in his knee. He still suffers from water in the knee,” Kranjcar senior said, as quoted by the Scottish Sun.
“But he is still under contract with Rangers. You would have to ask him whether he will continue when his contract expires in the summer.
“He was out for almost nine months and when he played since coming back, he played well. But frankly, it is more and more difficult for him.
“When you get an injury like that, it’s not just physical, it can be the psychological side of it too.
“I retired at 35. I had an Achilles tendon injury, but I came back and I had less of a break than him. But at that stage, I already had no desire to keep playing.
“I think he is going to keep trying and at least he’s only 33. I want him to continue his career, but it’s his decision.”
Even if Kranjcar decides against retiring this summer, it is unlikely that he will continue at Rangers.
The left- or central-midfield player is currently low down the pecking order at Ibrox, where Sean Goss, Greg Docherty and Jamie Murphy have arrived in his position since the turn of the year.
Given his decorated past – Kranjcar counts Tottenham Hotspur and Dynamo Kiev among his previous clubs – it is likely the 81-cap star will be among the highest earners at Rangers.
