Newcastle United midfielder Jeff Hendrick has been widely criticised by the Irish press following his display against Wales yesterday.

The 26-year-old started in midfield for Ireland, but could not stop his country from falling to a disappointing 1-0 defeat.

The Newcastle man was even sent off midway through the second half.

And in three different publications he was given just a 4/10 rating.

The Irish Independent suggested that he had a ‘nightmare’, before giving him a lower rating than any other player on the pitch.

“Cardiff demanded a big game from Hendrick but this was a nightmare, off the pace more often than not and the red card summed up his night,” they wrote.

The Irish Times also said similar with their player ratings.

“A frustrating night for Ireland was encapsulated in Hendrick’s late red card for bringing down Roberts, shortly after he’d let Brooks run through on goal. Once again, he started brightly before fading,” they added.

Hendrick’s misery was completed with RTE also giving him a 4/10 and suggesting that the Newcastle man was unable to have the desired impact on the game.

Hendrick currently appears a player well out of form, with his move to Newcastle not really going to plan so far.

The former Burnley midfielder did score on debut, but he hasn’t been able to show his quality since and he has come under criticism for both club and country now.
