Nigel Martyn has responded to a Leeds fan on Twitter who expressed their disappointment at the fact that he was sold to Everton in 2003 and thus supporting them in the Merseyside derby on Sunday, and insisted that he was desperate to see the Whites promoted back to the top flight.
Martyn was a key part of the Leeds side that nearly climbed the domestic and European mountains around the turn of the Millennium – most notably reaching the Champions League semi-final in 2001 when Valencia denied them another crack at Bayern Munich in the final of Europe’s premier competition.
He made over 200 Premier League appearances for the Whites, before being frozen out as Paul Robison emerged as the side’s number one before their financial implosion, and ultimately left for Everton after seven years at Elland Road.
He went on to make 86 top flight appearances for the Toffees before retiring in 2006. He proved during his time at Goodison Park that he was most definitely still good enough for the highest level.
So perhaps it is no surprise that one Leeds fan took to social media after seeing Martyn comment on Everton’s Merseyside derby draw with Liverpool to express that the disappointment of seeing him leave 14 years ago still lingers, prompting Martyn to express his hope that Leeds would soon be back in the Premier League.
Leeds fans would certainly be forgiven for wishing that they had Martyn in his prime playing between the sticks right now. Both current stoppers Felix Wiedwald and Andy Lonergan have been guilty of a number of mistakes this term – while it seemed like Martyn made virtually no howlers during his career.
Thomas Christiansen’s men are still doing well in the Championship this term however, with Saturday’s 3-1 win over Queens Park Rangers leaving them seventh in the table.
